Stock and Bond Donations

Donating appreciated securities, including stocks, bonds or other assets, is an easy and tax-effective way for you to make a high impact gift to Reach the Forgotten Jail Ministry.

Benefits of this type of gifting include:
•    Avoid paying capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated stock
•    Receive a charitable income tax deduction
•    Bring the good news of Jesus Christ to more inmates and their families!

Ready to give a gift of stocks or bonds?

You can transfer stocks, bonds or mutual funds from your brokerage or investment account to the Reach the Forgotten brokerage account held by Edward Jones. You may contact our office at 616-784-4620, your county’s RTF Chaplain, or our Business Manager to initiate this kind of donation.

You can also contact your account representative to ask about the process of making a stock, bond or mutual fund gift. Every investment/brokerage company has their list of “gifting procedures” to follow.

Good to Know:

There are special rules for valuing a gift of stock. The value of a charitable gift of stock is determined by taking the mean between the high and low stock price on the date of the gift. Mutual fund shares are valued using the closing price for the fund on the date of the gift.

If you have any questions about gifting stocks, bonds or other assets, please contact our Business Manager, Joe Whalen, at 616-784-4620 x130 or JoeW@jailministry.org. We are happy to assist you and answer any questions you may have!
